Sherman Oaks Real Estate
The history of Sherman Oaks dates back over a century. It was one of the first San Fernando Valley communities to have been developed for both commercial and residential purposes, in preparation for the Los Angeles Aqueduct (1913).
In 1911, General Moses Hazeltine Sherman purchased 1,000 acres of land, which is where Sherman Oaks got its name. In 1927, General Sherman subdivided the land and sold it for $780 per acre. In more recent pop cultural memory, Sherman Oaks has been both lampooned and celebrated.
In the ‘80s, the Sherman Oaks Galleria became the go-to place for so-called ‘Valley Girls’ and their friends. It was immortalized in classic Generation X films like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Valley Girl. Suburban and affluent, Sherman Oaks continues to be an attractive living spot for families with kids with a good school district and reputable private schools. It is also appealing to singles who enjoy the lively scene around the main thoroughfare of Ventura Boulevard.
